What causes wood shingles to split and crack?Splitting and cracking of a wood shingle roof is a natural part of the aging process, largely due to shrinking and swelling caused by moisture and subsequent drying. Hail and wind damage causes the same wear. Call us for a free inspection.
Can an existing roof be covered with another?
Multiple roofing layers add weight and stress to a home’s structure and diminish a roof’s resistance to hail. Please check your local building codes as some codes or ordinances restrict the number of roofing layers a house may have. One issue to consider when applying a new roof over wood shingles is possible fungus problems.
Can composition shingles be repaired?
Yes. If damage is minor, a roof contractor can remove individual shingles and replace them with new matching shingles. What size hail is damaging to roofing? There are a number of factors - shape, hardness and density of hail, wind speed, age and type of roof. In general, pea and marble size hail should not damage composition roofing in good condition, unless extreme wind conditions are present.
Is it normal for granules from my composition roof to be found in my gutters, my driveway or my patio? Yes. Granular loss is part of the normal weathering process of a composition roof. Small hail impacting a roof, as well as rain, wind and foot traffic displaces some of the granules.
Are all homes in a neighborhood affected the same way by hail? No. The hail quantity, shape, size and hardness of hailstones can vary tremendously within a small radius. Wind velocity and direction is a factor. The roof pitch, age and condition are additional circumstances to consider.
